I said ‘I can buy them, Marigold make beautiful ones, I don’t have time’. He said ‘Find time, you can’t break with tradition, and I love your hot cross buns’. Deal, half bought, half made, mine perhaps a little dense as eager to bake while I turned the kitchen upside down in a last minute cleaning frenzy. Pass the wine, we are ready for a small but bun loaded Easter. Buona Pasqua a tutti. #unaustralianaaroma #nostalgicbaking #hotbuns
Mercato San Giovanni di Dio, ore 9, venerdì 26. Getting waylaid by the interesting wild greens and spring varietals (that the kids will probably hate) and forgetting to focus on the shopping list in hand. Look, bunches of Camomile to be enjoyed in a vase and then hung to be dried for infusions, gotta get some of that. Crescione (cress) di Campo, grab that, it’s on the list, Rancuglio, never heard of it. I love markets, they are the best part of my job, and so does my new friend Chiara from @mercatidiroma. Her site - mercati di Roma - markets of Rome, has info on hundreds of stalls and dozens of markets, about the people, the produce, the history of these places that are such integral and important parts of the urban fabric of the city. New on the site is Via Niccolini which we visited together, with words by Chiara and English translation by me. #springatthemarket #wildgreens #marketlovers #mercatidiroma #marketsofrome
When I next go to Melbourne (😓) I might sign Mum up for Instagram so she can have a giggle at how much airplay I give her here. Another one of her recipes - the Sour Cream Spice cake - out of my first recipe folder (see second and third slides, some gems in there) that Emma and I are having fun leafing through on the hunt for things to cook during our latest lockdown. I bought beautiful thick 25% fat sour cream from the little shop near us that sells Babushka and all sorts of Eastern European ingredients, and spices from @emporiodellespezie that has a spice mix called cookie that fits well where allspice is called for. Not really a tea drinker but could put the kettle on for this, recipe on my website, link in profile. #nostalgicbaking #sourcreamspicecake #mumscakecollection #firstrecipefolder
Can’t buy anchovies without thinking of you @rachelaliceroddy, busy around the table, deftly ripping of heads and showing people how to run their fingers down through the tummy. Missing you and @carla_tomasi and #markettotablerome and all the lovely people who would come, and our frying fests, and nice fizz and Carla’s ravioli. Ah, it’s Friday, that’s why I am nostalgic. On the upside we are having #aliceinchiappate (stuffed then fried!) for dinner. #fridayfish #markettotable #toolongwithoutbubbles
Bagel mania. The news that Steve and Linda from @thebeehiverome had a fully fledged bagel business @beehivebagels up and running had kind of slipped under my radar, but here is yesterday’s order ready to be toasted up for breakfast, and maybe lunch too, and they are delicious, perfect NY styled, boiled and then baked artisan bagels. I am excited, bagels have a little chunk of my food memory space that involves Bagels & Lox on the streets of San Francisco and I know they are going to be a hit with the home schoolers. I chose the Cinnamon & Raisin for breakfast (with liberal use of butter) and am going back in for a plain avec honey. The stories of people like Linda and Steve who have pandemic pivoted their businesses are a constant inspiration, go and read the story of how they teamed up with a local pizzaiolo so they could expand production, I just love it. The fresh bagels also come with handy notes on how to store half your order in the freezer for emergency snacking, but I don’t think I am going to have any surplus this time. #brilliantbagels #alittlebitofNYinrome #artisanbagels #realbread
This morning I met Chiara @mercatidiroma, fellow market junkie and absolute treasure trove of info on markets all over the capital (her site mercatidiroma.com/marketsofrome.com lists over 70 from food to collectibles). We had a walk around one of my old favorites, the little outdoor market on Via Niccolini in Monteverde (that Marjorie from @insidersitaly introduced me to), saying ciao to the stall holders whom I have seen so little of since latteria studio closed its doors. Happily, most of them reported that business has held steady, maybe even grown a little over the past year. Music to our ears, getting people back to shopping local, and favoring the small shops and markets has to be one of the good things that has come from the past pandemic year. Stay tuned for more exploring. #shopatthemarket #mercatonicollini #shoplocal #mercatidiroma #marketsoftheworld
Auguri a noi donne - Happy International Women’s Day - 8 March 2021. This is us with our maternal grandmother Marjorie, I think everything I got from my mum essentially came from her. We are the generation that have parents and grandparents that lived through wars and shortages, in times when you mended socks and re-used butter paper. It is our responsibility to do everything we can to pass their mindfulness to the next generation, and try and make things better along the way. #femalerolemodels #grandmothermotherdaughter #internationalwomensday
My new website is live - www.aliceadamscarosi.com Thank you so much Jonathan @sayhellocreative! Cheers to your supreme tech skills and creativity, we squeezed three websites into one (styling portfolio, blog and latteria studio) and it was a super process and so great to get a useful project crossed off the list at this moment in time. The recipe section has been sorted into headings, one of which is Australiana, which is where you can find the recipe for these sausage rolls, also filed under pastry, because the not too fussy but very effective Rough Puff recipe is in there too. Link in profile, happy viewing, and shoot me a message if you find any missing info that my not so keen editors eye has missed.
This week’s recipe idea. Trout, farmed and sustainable, cheap and flavorful. Great choice over (often) poorly farmed Salmon. Cooked the way Dad sometimes did when he came home from one of his fishing trips with an actual fish. (Always wondered if trout fishing was maybe just an excuse to hang out in huge gumboots in wild places). In oven, with rasher of pancetta or streaky bacon on either side and inside cavity, wild thyme, sage and rosemary, black pepper. The earthy flavors suit the inland nature of the fish. Cook - from 20 to 30 mins depending on size - till skin peels off easily. Recipe in Italian in this week’s @cipiacecucinare #fishideas #sustainablefish #beyondsalmon #farmedincentralitaly
