Hands up anyone who owns an item from hard rubbish? Our place in Lubriano has no new chairs, well actually no new furniture, and at least 3 of the chairs I found out on the street. I go into a sort of fever when I find good stuff on the roadside and am quite unabashed about sifting through and sort of digging about the big Roman bins, always certain one of my rather older and quite concerned about dirt neighbors is watching. For lovers of the good hunt, like my cousin Anna who accompanied me on a foray to what I consider the best local Mercatino, the one at San Giovanni, the Rome and surrounds second hand stores have something for everyone. And as with the charity shop version, everyone wins.
Here is a list of some favorite hunting spots. These are more furniture and collectables (oggetistica), with some clothing. I’ll post on Rome’s great vintage clothing stores soon.
A real charity version: Mercatino Volontari Regina Coeli, Via della Lungara Trastevere, open Friday and Saturday 17.00 – 22.00 and Sunday 10.00 – 19.30 and maybe other times. Mainly collectables. Helps nearby Regina Coeli prison association.
‘Mercatini del Usato’, an Italy wide chain: Porta Maggiore, Via Sebastiano Grandis, 7. tel 06 702 4299 open 9.30 – 20.00 7 days a week – parking. In my opinion the best in Rome, great furniture and collectables.
